GPS/INS Testing for Robust Positioning
The integration of the United States Global Positioning System and Inertial Navigation System has brought positioning to new heights by overcoming the limitations of both positioning systems. In situations where positioning and signals are weak, such as in urban environments, the INS will initialize and acquire information on the 3-D position, velocity, and altitude of the receiver.
The INS will also make up for the limited dynamic capabilities of the receiver, producing relatively environment-independent data, with accuracy levels as high as that of the GPS. The INS device will consist of accelerometers, gyroscopes, and other electronic components and integrate (either by loose or tight coupling) with the GPS receiver to provide robust positioning, even when the signal is blocked or temporarily lost.
